Enterprise Communications: State of Workforce Mobility

Frost & Sullivan recently completed their annual survey of nearly 2,000 IT decision makers about their use of technology and plans for the future.  For several years, one of the top IT and business priorities for companies has been around enabling a workforce that is increasingly mobile and remote.  Here is a sneak peek at some of the survey’s findings:

 

Mobile Devices

 

Unsurprisingly, nearly 98% of companies reported that their employees use smart phones for business purpose.  Tablets are almost as ubiquitous as 93% of enterprise said that their employees used these as well.  What may come as more of a surprise, is that only 20% of companies reported that the mobile devices being used for work were company-owned (and paid for) as opposed to employee-owned.  For this reason many IT professionals continue to worry about the security of their enterprise data.

 

Bring Your Own Device

 

Regardless of whether it is a good thing or a bad thing, it would appear that the BYOD (bring your own device) trend is firmly entrenched in the business communications ecosystem.  Not only are personal devices rampant within the enterprise, but only 15% of the IT professionals surveyed expect the use of personal hardware and software to decline in the next two years, whereas nearly 50% expect the BYOD trend to grow, both in their company and in the marketplace.

 

Operating System

 

The Android operating system, which is often more affordable, is more prevalent than the iOS operating system.  This is true across both employer-provided and employee-provided devices, and is likely due to the fact that iOS enabled devices are usually priced at a premium in the marketplace rather than to some innate preference among IT decision makers.

 

IT Budgets

 

Mobile devices and applications garner the third-highest budget allocation within IT after security and infrastructure.   On average, companies spend approximately 12% of their IT budgets on mobile devices and applications.   This trend would seem to suggest that more and more companies are embracing a mobile-centric or even mobile-first approach to business.
