50% of PBX Market Set to Go Cloud by 2020

Mar 2017

According to a recently released survey of telecommunications service providers around the globe, more than half of all businesses are anticipated to adopt cloud based Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) by 2020, surpassing the traditional on-premise PBX systems championed by companies like Cisco, Avaya, Mitel, and ShoreTel for so long.

UCaaS Moves Upmarket

The biggest change industry observers and telecom companies see is within the upmarket segments, where telcos expect that 45% of large enterprises to be on hosted VoIP and cloud based phone solutions, which is a 25% point increase from last year’s survey. The magnitude of that jump reveals just how quickly UCaaS solutions are taking hold in the business communications and collaboration market with video, chat, and web meetings becoming increasingly important.

“We’ve come to a tipping point because the old PBX systems that powered communications are on their way out and are no longer being replaced or upgraded with like for like. The cloud is viable, broadband can accommodate it, the PBX vendors are no longer around and workers need more mobility,” said Taher Behbehani. “All of this points towards cloud adoption. We are finally reaching the stage where technology will help improve the way people work rather than dictate how they should do it.”

Key Survey Findings

The 2nd annual UCaaS survey was commissioned by BroadSoft, the #1 global platform for hosted VoIP according to IHS Markit Technology Group. The survey identified several noteworthy trends including:

  • Acceleration of cloud UC across multiple segments (SMB, Midmarket, Enterprise)
  • Importance of mobility, dispersed workforce, and connecting disparate offices
  • Team collaboration uptake (video, web meetings, instant messaging and presence)

The survey of 130 global telecom providers and industry leader respondents. According to Frost & Sullivan BroadSoft, on which the Altus offer is based, is the global unified communication software as a service (UCaaS) leader with 41% market share according to and more than 15 million cloud PBX/Hosted PBX lines deployed.
